Revelation in 2017

One of the most important things that we need today, especially in the church world, is “revelation” – by that I mean – we need to know what we cannot see.  When Jesus left this world, He sent the disciples back the “Comforter” – and with that Holy Spirit, who indwells, comes “gifts” --- three of those powerful gifts are (1) a word of knowledge, (2) a word of wisdom, and (3) discerning of spirits.

Our US military today depends so much on “intelligence”.  Before they act or move, they must have what they call “actionable intelligence” – in other words, they need to be able to “see” and “know” before they act.  That’s why billions of dollars are spent on satellites, drones, and other “intelligence gathering” devices.  We not only want intelligence officers on the ground, but “eyes in the skies”.

So much this past year has been said about hacking of intelligence – and we have witnessed a tremendous amount of what was previously “hidden” information – coming to light.  Most of that was not flattering.  It’s like the “secret” things were being made known, much to the chagrin of the participants.

As I was praying about this, I came to one of my favorite verses of Scripture:Jeremiah 33:3  says,  

 “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’’

We have fondly heard this called, “God’s Phone Number” – and usually we use this verse, when we are praying for God to “show up” and do some mighty miracle in our lives.

A closer look at the word in the original used for the English word, “mighty things” is the word “batsare” which actually means “things not yet revealed, or that which is inaccessible, hidden or isolated”  What God is telling Jeremiah and us today – if we call on God – HE will reveal the hidden – HE will reveal the previously inaccessible things of God – In other words, God will reveal what is really going on – so that we can spiritually have actionable intelligence into the spiritual realm, so that we can “tear down and build up” what is needed.

Remember, we often pray and want God to do things, which HE has already done – or has already given us the power to do.  We just need to know what’s happening and how to respond in the Spirit.

If we’ve seen anything this year  (2016) we have seen that when God’s people pray, “revelation” comes.  Some say the Russians “hacked” – or Wikileaks did someone in – was it not God who revealed the hidden things going on?  Hey, the election may be over – but as we pray, God will continue to keep us “up to the minute” as to what is happening in the spirit realm.  When we know – we can pray more effectively – we can act.  I don’t believe God will do for us what He wants us to do --- the problem in the church is that too many Christians don’t do – and worse – don’t know what to do.  In 2017, ignorance is not acceptable!  Call on HIM – and HE will reveal HIS plan and purposes – then act – do – get involved – fulfill HIS plan over your life.

Appeal to Heaven!

We are entering into a strategic time in the history of mankind.  We are 15 years, now, into the third millennium.  Many predicted that the world would end in 2000.  Remember Y2K?  We were told that the computers would crash -- power grids would go down - etc. etc.   Something unique is happening this past year and this year -- and that is the 4 Blood Moons.

These are not rare events -- when you have four "blood moons" happening in a row over a period of two years.  They have occurred many times this past century.  What makes this unique is that this time (as in 1492-1493; 1948-1949; and 1967-1968) they are tied to Jewish feasts or holidays.  Below is an illustration of what is happening, and a little history to "bring you up to to speed".

There are many "doomsday" folks who are telling us that the "end of the age" is here!

I'm reminded of what Jesus said, "When you see these things begin to happen -- look up....."

I do believe that something strategic is going to happen as it relates to the nation of Israel.

My number one concern is WHAT IS GOD SAYING TO HIS CHURCH?

At the top of this blog, I pictured the flag that was used by our first armies, when they were fighting for their lives against all odds, under the direction of George Washington.  Long before Betsy Ross and the stars and stripes flag -- this flag was flown.  Notice the words --- "An Appeal to Heaven".  What is simply means is that our early leaders were totally dependent of God's intervention, and they were not too proud, or should I say, "politically correct" to say so.  

It is high time to Call on God again!  I believe that as "my people who are called by my name" humble themselves and pray -- and repent -- and turn away from unrighteousness --- God will hear our "appeal to heaven" -- and we will witness a mighty "outpouring" of God's love and mercy.

WE NEED AN AWAKENING! 

 We need HIM again!

Tough People

This past week, thousands of people gathered in Orlando, FL, for the Biennial General Council of the Assemblies of God.  We heard a number of powerful speakers who brought a mixture of messages – updates from the front lines of what is going on in our culture and around the world and we were encouraged by the reports of what God is doing! 

Oft times, if you only hear what the media is telling you, you will come away discouraged and upset.  There is no doubt that these are “tough times”. 

I don’t need to repeat what you already know.  There are times when you come away believing that the whole world is “going to hell in a hand basket”. 

I am reminded by the statement that Robert Schuller made years ago – “Tough Times don’t last – Tough people do!”

What are the qualifications of a “Tough Person”?  This blog isn’t large enough to list all of them, but let me tell you a few:

(1) A person of CONVICTION --  you just have to have something bigger than yourself to hold on to – you’ve got to have something anchoring your life – or you will be blown away by tough times

(2) a person of FAITH – no matter what you think – you HAVE to have Faith – I’m not talking about faith in yourself – or just faith for faith sake – but Faith in God – those who have faith in God are the most stable of all people

(3) a person of PURPOSE - I’ve heard it said that if you don’t know where you are going, you will succeed --- when you get where you get – you’ll not know where you are anyway!   In these troubled times, you must have a purpose – you need direction – you need to know which way to “set your sails” – you cannot just drift along! 

Are you a person of conviction?  Are you a person of Faith?  Are you a person who has purpose?  If so, you are on your way to becoming a “Tough Person” during these “Tough Times”.

I am encouraged today!  I want you to be encouraged also!

We Need an AWAKENING!

Things are happening so fast ......events are unfolding daily .... sometimes hourly.  Each time something happens, the social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others) immediately "blow up".  People from around the globe are responding - and mostly from fear!  




The Bible tells us clearly that "when you BEGIN to see these things come to pass ..... LOOK UP ... your REDEMPTION is drawing near!"

Now more than ever we need to PRAY and get serious about our commitment to God!  I saw a post the other day on FB that simply said 

"Part-time Christians are no match for Full-Time Devils"

I still believe that God is moving by His Spirit across the land -- and wherever people will call out to HIM in faith -- HE will move and change things for us!

We desperately need a move of God in these days!  We need Repentance and a Return to God --- I pray for America to get back to our roots --- but if the whole nation doesn't return -- I pray that everyone who will listen, will "return to God" -- Get you own life and house in order!

How much time do we have?  Only God knows the time-line!  We do know that the statement of the angel is true, "This same Jesus which you see taken up into heaven WILL come again ....."

Are you ready for the return of the KING of KINGS?  I am!  I echo the words on the last page of the Bible .... 

"EVEN SO, COME LORD JESUS"!

Use ALL 5 Gifts!

Saw a statement posted on Facebook the other day, which said:  “We will never change the world by going to church.  We will only change the world by being the church.”  This is so true -- the difference is between “going” and “being”.  You’ve heard it said that we are human BEINGS not human doings!  We are made to BE!

I think the challenge comes in the above statement --- “change the world”.  When I grew up in church that was always a core belief – which our reason for existence was to “change” for the better the world around us.  We frequently had missionaries coming through our church telling us of how God was using them to change the world.  We had evangelists come to our church often – and each time they challenged us to “win lost people” to Christ.

Today, things have changed.  “Stagnation” has come to many churches – we merely exist to benefit ourselves.  Look at the sermon topics lately – “how to….” How to be financially independent – how to be successful – how to have a good family – how to overcome this and that …… 

Where is the voice of the Apostle, setting things in Divine order–pioneering what God is saying today ?– where is the voice of the Prophet, who calls us back to repentance for our lethargy and lack of compassion on the lost around us? --- where is the voice of the Evangelist who stirs our hearts for changing our culture?

No, we hear the Pastor – the man who now assumes full responsibility for the development of the congregation – he is the administrator, the business genius, the “prophet, priest, and king” of the house!  Now, don’t get me wrong – I love the Pastor – I’ve been a Pastor for the most of my 40+ years in professional ministry. 

My point is we have neglected the other “office ministries” in the local church. Paul wrote to the Ephesians (4:11-12) and said that Christ had given 5 gifts to the church – Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor, and Teacher.  God never intended the church to be only operating from the one position – the Pastor.   

I like what the Message Bible says of this passage:  “He handed out gifts above and below, filled heaven with his gifts, filled earth with his gifts. He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christ’s followers in skilled servant work, working within Christ’s body, the church, until we’re all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God’s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ.”

Notice that the purpose of these office gifts is: “working within Christ’s body, the church, until we’re all moving rhythmically and easily with each other…”

The Amplified Bible says it this way:  “His intention was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints (His consecrated people), [that they should do] the work of ministering toward building up Christ’s body (the church)”

The goal is to minister OUTSIDE the four walls of the church building – to actually BE the church – using our influence in every area of society to “redeem” that, which is lost.

In order to do this, we need ALL of the office ministries of Christ to work together:

Bring back the Apostle! 

Bring back the Prophet! 

Bring back the Evangelist! 

Bring back the Teacher! 

Work together with the Pastor to accomplish His purposes in the world.

LEGACY

My mentor and friend, John Maxwell writes a lot about “legacy”.   In life, as we get older, we all reflect on our future and what we leave behind, and what is before.  John had his “wake-up” call when he had a heart attack at the young age of 51.  I got a wake-up call when in 2005 I was diagnosed with cancer.  I think about legacy every day now.

I was once again aroused in my thinking last night – when my wife’s father, Dave McNeilly received his heavenly promotion.  We were at his side when he took that last breath – at the age of 86.  What a precious man of faith and conviction.  He has impacted so many people over the years.  He is the father of two children, proud grandfather of five grandkids who adore him – and great-grandpa to twelve kids, who think he’s the greatest!  Pictured above is the youngest great-grandchild (# 12) – my granddaughter, Vera Victoria Railey, age one. When I look at that picture, I know that even though she may not remember all about him – she will be impacted by his influence in the family.

He is leaving an awesome legacy – every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild has a rich Christian heritage.  Dave was such a strong man of faith and so many people felt his influence. He never knew a stranger and was accepting of everyone, making them know how much he cared for them.  He was an inspiration to all, and was a mentor to many.

Dave is leaving his legacy.  Think about who is following you! What will your legacy be?

REFLECTION

Driving along the highway the other day, I was listening to the audio book of John Maxwell’s classic, The 15 Laws of Growth.  Over and over John kept talking about the power of thoughtful reflection.  He made statements that said, in effect, “experience is not the best teacher…. reflective experience is.”  As I thought about this, I was conscience-stricken by the fact that many times I have attended seminars, read good books, heard fantastic speakers, then never took the time to stop and “reflect”.

We all are aware of the idea of reflection.  We’ve seen the awe-inspiring views of scenery reflected on the water.  We daily look at the reflection of ourselves in the mirror.  Where would we be without the mirror?  How would we prepare ourselves for each day without the reflection of who we are staring back at us?

But for a moment – let’s think about the other kind of reflection – the kind where we think about what we’ve learned, heard, or read – where we think about the experiences we have gone through.

One of my favorite Bible passages says, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable n your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer” (Psalms 19:14).  There’s that word “meditate” or “reflect upon”.  

I’m not talking about some mindless transcendental meditation.  Even Confucius stated, “Learning without reflection is a waste. Reflection without learning is dangerous.”

Doing a word study on that Hebrew word for “meditate,” you’ll find definitions such as, “ruminate, roll over in the mind, analyze, study, imagine, muse, mutter, and groanings”.    To those who are familiar with cows and sheep – ruminate means the same as ‘chewing the cud’ – the process of a double digestion of food.

In life, we all have so much information flowing into our minds and lives – so many experiences – so many voices being heard.  How do you learn?  How do you apply what you’ve heard?  What do you need to apply, and what do you need to ignore?

We’ve heard the expressions, ‘head knowledge’ and ‘heart knowledge’ – how does information get from head to heart?  -     REFLECTION

John Maxwell talks about a “thinking chair” – a quite place where he goes to reflect and think.  We all need to do more reflecting – more mediation – more rumination.

If you want to change your life – change your future – change your family – start with some reflective thinking.  All actions are based in our thoughts.  Go to the source of your actions – think better – think and learn – and change for the better

How Well Do You Know Yourself?

I wrote recently in a blog concerning knowing your purpose.  I think we need to look back a bit and see that if we are going to know our purpose, we must first know ourselves.  John Maxwell in his great book, The Fifteen Invaluable Laws of Growth, writes in the second law – “The Law of Awareness - you must know yourself to grow yourself.” 

John goes on to say, “to grow, you must know…your strengths and weaknesses, your interests and opportunities. You must be able to gauge not only where you’ve been, but also where you are now. Otherwise you cannot set a course for where you want to go.” 

Think about this statement!

How well do you know yourself?  What motivates you?  What do you like?  What are you good at doing?  What energizes you?  This will take time to reflect and understand, because if we ever intend to grow our businesses, our families, our finances, our future, we must first grow ourselves.  To do that we must be fully aware.

John asks some probing questions in his book: 

1. Do you like what you’re doing now?

2. What would you like to do?

3. Can you do what you would like to do?

4. Do you know why you want to do what you would like to do?

5. Do you know what to do so you can do what you want to do?

 6. Do you know people who do what  you’d like to do?

7. Should you do what you’d like to do with them? 

8. Will you pay the price to do what you want to do?

9. When can you start doing what you’d like to do? 

10.  What will it be like when you get to do what you’d like to do?

Take time to review these questions?  Meditate and reflect on them as they apply to you!  You’ll begin to know yourself.  It’s a beginning to a lifetime of growing to become the person you were made to be.

1. The day you were born

2. The day you discover why?

Do YOU Know Your Purpose?

Purpose – the why for our existence – that which defines us as a person – that which causes us to be unique.  Do you know your purpose?

Our children and youth are tested often during their lifetimes, to judge how much they know, and what they know.  Sometime between elementary school and high school, they will take aptitude tests, psychological assessments, and ‘giftedness’ evaluations to determine what is the ‘bent’ or interests.  The sad thing is that after all those tests, they may end up wandering and drifting along through life, without a sense of direction and purpose. We are discovering that many college graduates cannot find jobs in their field of study and expertise, and they are either unemployed or are settling for jobs that make them feel unfulfilled.

Do YOU know your purpose in life?  What is your direction? 

John Maxwell writes in his book Your Roadmap For Success , “Nothing can take the place of knowing your purpose.” I believe that each of us is made by our Creator and a portion of His image is in us. That means we each have a destiny – a purpose.  We are NOT here by accident!  The problem comes when you don’t know that purpose.  Years are wasted searching, usually by trial and error, for a reason.  Many miserable days are spent doing “work” that produces no satisfaction emotionally, and that nagging feeling that you are on a “cruise to nowhere”.   John talks about that in his book.  In many of the coastal ports of America, cruise line companies offer “cruises to nowhere” (day cruises) – in other words, you pay to take a ride at sea, only to return in a few hours to the same port you left, having went nowhere!  Does this describe the way you feel? All that effort, and you’re seemingly going nowhere?

Now let me quickly let you know that SUCCESS in life is a journey --- not a destination.  Also, beware that success relates to your direction, and not your destination.  Since success in life is a journey, you ought to know your direction. Have you ever heard someone say,  “You can’t get there from here?”  That means you are not headed in the right direction!  Which way are you headed? 

You must know your purpose, so you can set your direction!

One of the ways you can begin to determine your purpose in life, is to spend time reflecting on who you are?  What do you like?  What activities bring you the most satisfaction?  What energizes you?  If you’ll stop and listen to yourself, ask the tough questions, and be honest with yourself, you’ll begin to uncover that inner purpose for your life.

GROWTH IS NOT AUTOMATIC

So many of us think that because we are alive, growth is automatic.  Yes, we grow physically automatically – or at least it seems that way to us.  We’re born as babies, and because our parents feed us and nurture us, our bodies do seem to grow automatically.  We get larger, taller, and heavier as life goes on, one birthday at a time.  We learn to walk and talk, mostly by trial and error.  Then we’re off to school to learn even more about what life is all about.  We go through the processes of time, and one day we ‘graduate’ – first with a diploma, then maybe with a degree. Then what?

I came across a statistic recently that blew my mind:

            One-third of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives. 42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college. 80 percent of U.S. families did not buy or read a book last year. 70 percent of U.S. Adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years

I think we assume that because we go to work everyday – at whatever job you have – that you are learning and growing because you “show up”.  Unfortunately, that just does NOT mean you are growing intellectually, socially, spiritually, etc.

If you want to truly grow in your family life, your business acumen, your spiritual walk with God, and your leadership abilities, then it will require a deliberate, intentional decision and action to make this happen.  Growth is NOT automatic!

John Maxwell writes in his New York Times Bestselling book, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, “Growth doesn’t just happen.”  He calls it the “Law of Intentionality”. He quotes Jim Rohn who says, “You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight.”  In other words, you have to make a decision to grow – you have to be determined to grow – and you have to take action in order to grow.

Are you growing?  Or, are you stuck, using and believing what you’ve always believed? Are you doing things the way you’ve always done them?  You do know that one definition of “insanity” is “doing the same things over and over, and expecting different results”?

YOU'RE THE LID

Some 17 years ago, my mentor and friend, John Maxwell published a multi-million dollar best seller book, 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Over and over again, John defines leadership as ‘influence.’  His famous statement was and is, “everything rises and falls on leadership”.  In my journey, I have discovered these laws working in my vocation and calling – the ministry.  For the past forty plus years, I have lived out these laws – for better or worse. 

The first law he writes about is called “The Law of the Lid.”  John clearly states, “Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness.”  What I have seen in every organization that I have led or have been a part of, the top leader sets the bar, and the organization follows.  In other words, the organization cannot exceed the abilities of the top leader – he or she IS the Lid.  I’ve seen so many churches or non-profit organizations being frustrated with their level of growth.  The answer which we don’t always like to hear, is that the leader is the one who moves the bar higher, ONLY as they improve their own leadership abilities. 

John writes, “The higher you want to climb, the more you need leadership. The greater the impact you want to make, the greater your influence needs to be.”

Are you frustrated as a leader that others are not following as you like? Are you expecting results that just are not happening in your church, organization, or civic group? Affirming

By definition the word "Affirm" means:
: to say that something is true in a confident way

: to show a strong belief in or dedication to (something, such as an important idea)



We hear this word used a lot today in society, concerning social interactions - and lately it is being used to describe churches.  We are all aware of the term "political correctness" --- I still struggle to define this term --- it's really not about "political" at all -- unless the government is trying to dictate what is correct   [I think sometimes this is exactly what it means].

This "affirmation" is being presented as a "badge" of acceptance, and is usually used by the minority or people who consider themselves "down-trodden".

The poor want to be affirmed.  The minority races want to be affirmed.  The "gay" community wants to be affirmed.  The people who are here in America without citizenship want to be affirmed (I really don't like the term "illegal aliens" -- they are not aliens, they are people).  

Churches are now putting themselves forward as being "affirming".  What does that mean??  We used to see huge banners and signs on church building stating "Everyone Welcome"!  But, usually that meant, "everyone who looks like us, is welcome."   Martin Luther King Jr. is credited with saying that "Sunday morning is the most segregated day of the week".  

Today churches are wanting to be open to ALL people -- and that is often a challenge.  I wonder if in our effort to reach people, are we compromising what we stand for?

If the definition of "Affirm" is really to "say something is really true in a confident manner" - or "to show a strong belief in or dedication to something" -- then we cannot compromise our beliefs and our doctrine on the altar of "correctness".

If your church says they are "affirming" and what it means is... everyone is welcome to come and you are not required to change, because we accept you as you are, no matter what --- I have a problem with that.  

Yes the church is that "hospital" for sick people -- everyone is welcome at the cross -- but NO ONE leaves the cross unchanged!  I love the statement I heard from Pastor Rod Parsley years ago -- "God loves you too much, to leave you the way He found you!" - That's the Gospel (Good News)!

Come as you are -- leave a different person!  We are seeing too many churches downplaying the truth of the Bible to the extent that no body is changing anything!  Frankly, if my trip to church doesn't change me -- it wasn't worth the trip!

Am I calling for condemnation?   A thousand times NO! 
Am I calling for compassion? YES  
Am I calling for the truth?  YES -- the truth spoken and demonstrated by LOVE!

I affirm you as a person!
I affirm you as a person for whom Christ died on the cross to save!
I affirm you as a human who is made in the image of God!
I affirm that we are all sinners in need of a Savior!
I affirm that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God - the only Savior of mankind!
I affirm that God is in the process of changing each of us, by His grace and mercy!
I affirm that as I allow the Holy Spirit to work in me - I am changing - and you will too!

Now that is affirmation!  

That IS the business of the church -- not to please everyone - not to judge anyone - but to point everyone to the Cross, where change happens!

Towel & Basin Challenge

According to Bill Saporito in Time Magazine (September 1, 2014), "Americans give more than $300 Billion annually to charitable causes.  We're a generous lot.  Then again, there are a lot of hands out.  More than a million charitable organizations are asking for those dollars, and many of these organization are inefficient, even if they are well-meaning."

Then comes the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and money for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - a fatal disease that attacks the nervous system).  From July 29 through August 20 of this year, the ALS Association has raised more than $31 million to fund research --- more than all they raised in 2012.

People go on social media --- dunk themselves with ice water -- make a  $10 donation - and challenge their friends to do the same in 24 hours.  It's like this phenomenon has taken over social media --- ordinary folks to famous folks are getting involved --- even former President George Bush has done it.

As I have watched person after person getting wet --- I am reminded of the greatest challenge ever given in all of history -- I call it the Towel & Basin Challenge.

Jesus Christ, just before He went to the Cross for the sins of this world, met with his disciples in a room --- he picked up a basin of water, and a towel -- and he knelt down and started washing the feet of these men.  He then said to them --- do this to each other.

What did Jesus mean?  Was He instituting some sacrament in the Church?  There are some who believe so -- but I think Jesus was simply telling these disciples, these followers of Jesus to serve one another -- to be willing to serve others.

In a sense the folks dunking themselves with ice water are doing so to raise awareness and funds for research of a dreaded disease, in hopes that one day ALS can be conquered.  There are so many needs -- so many causes -- so many diseases needing money for research -- so many people in need!

Why not turn out attention to someone nearby in need -- to some family in your community in need - then remember the basin and towel -- do something to serve them!

Take them a meal -- buy then lunch -- mow their lawn -- help watch their children so that the single Mom can have a few minutes to herself, to go to the store -- sit and talk with that elderly person -- visit with them -- there is something YOU can do.

If you want to dunk the ice bucket -- go for it!

Towel & Basin Challenge to do something today for someone in need nearby?
